The old adage, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” is true. And it correctly places “Reduce” and “Reuse” ahead of “Recycle”.
Our primary objective needs to be to REDUCE – first at the industry level and then at a personal level. It stops consumption and waste right at the source. Before we make any purchase, we ask ourselves whether we really NEED something, or whether we simply WANT it. This doesn’t mean that we never splurge or that we live like monks, but being mindful about our consumption is a practice we have inculcated in our lives. Like Mahatma Gandhi said “The world has enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed.“
Next, we focus on REUSE – in our effort to live a sustainable life, we go through some lengths to reuse things rather than let them end up in a landfill. And we also find quite a bit of joy & pride in it. A few examples of our “Reuse” projects are shared below.
Outdoor table made out of scrap decking and old fence posts
One of our recent REUSE projects involved creating an X-Leg Herringbone Outdoor Dining Table, thanks to Rogue Engineer whose design we downloaded and adopted to our needs. We were renovating our old deck and wanted to avoid letting the old decking and some old fence posts that we had also been saving from ending up in the garbage / landfill. The old outdoor table was completely falling apart so it presented an awesome opportunity for some hands-on fun and a lot of pride! 😉
